Urban Organika is a modern aquaponics farm located just outside the city of Kikinda, in Serbia.

We grow a variety of high quality lettuce, herbs & leafy greens all year round.

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). Inspiration is taken from nature – where we see the symbiotic relationship between fish, bacteria, and plants in waterways & water bodies all over the world.

On our farm we have created a recirculating system that mimics and optimises this symbiotic relationship, enabling us to grow our lettuce and leafy greens in an intensive but sustainable manner. When fed, our fish produce waste that is oxidised by bacteria, converting it into usable nutrients for the plants. The solid waste is separated from the water before reaching the plants, which absorb the nutrients and, in doing so, purify the water for the fish.

And the best part?

Aquaponic-grown produce is by its nature free from chemical pesticides & herbicides (since they would be poisonous to our fish) and from synthetic fertilisers (because our fish provide our plants with all the nutrients they need!). It is also inherently free from antibiotics, as antibiotics would adversely affect the plants and bacteria in the system.
